Question Asked: Took these pictures in the blackberry patch behind my house in Central PA. I never knew that poison ivy grew on the ground like this. The man that cuts the grass told me it was there last year, but never mentioned it!!! Now, the whole area seems to be plastered with this stuff. If this is poison ivy, it covers a large area of the woods behind my house, and needs to be gone. How do you get rid of large patches of this stuff?

Answer: Hi Cynthia -

I see a couple vines and some odds and ends in the picture. I believe the primary vine is poison ivy. In the second picture, there is a green stem that is confusing me but perhaps its part of one of the other plants? Oh *doh* I get it - I had to look at the pictures a couple times for it to all click for me. That's a blackberry cane (note the sheepish grin on my face...). Anyway, yup you've got poison ivy. It does indeed grow along the ground (and up trees - just wherever it can). Getting rid of the poison ivy means evaluating the area and determining what you want to keep or can let go away. If there are nearby plants you are concerned about, you'll want to consider not using Brush-B-Gon or other woody plant killer. If you do use Brush-B-Gon you'll want to make sure that you don't have problems with overspray. Go to our control section to see recommendations on getting rid of the plants.
