Question Asked: I took these pictures today along a path that runs thru my woods. I know it's out there since I am recovering from a case of poison ivy. I live in southeastern Michigan.
Answer: Hi Chris -
The first picture had me do a double take. Then I saw the opposite leaves, that's boxelder. Just an imposter but one that looks amazingly like poison ivy until you get a closer look. In the second picture, we see a number of vines and scrub but no poison ivy. The 3 leaflet per leaf plant in the center of the picture has barbs on the stem. This could be northern dewberry or similar bramble. The third picture contains what I believe is the culprit. In about the middle of the picture, we see a plant with leaves have 3 leaflets, the middle leaflet on a longer stem, the leaves appear to be alternating on the stem, and the stem is woody in appearance. I believe we're looking at poison ivy here. Interesting leaflet shapes. For the final (4th) picture there's nothing exciting here as it's boxelder. Notice the opposite leaves and the greenish stem. |
