I also like to use a weed wacker. Unbeknownst to me I also whacked poison ivy all over the place 3 weeks ago. My lower legs got covered with poison ivy. It was bad! So bad that I had to take steriods to get rid of it, otherwise I would still have it now.
I hope your friend was wearing pants because I was wearing shorts. I also hope he wash his legs off with cold water (I did not). He'll know within 48 hours if he got it (the itching & blishers started 4 days later with me).
I hope it doesn't get the poison ivy because it sucked!
