There are a variety of sumacs. Maybe they made them out of the non- poisonous plants. The smooth sumac variety is very common. We have it in the woods around here in Southern Michigan. You can really pick it out in the fall when the colors change. Beautiful colors but it can be invasive and I think it is common to the lower 48.
