I have a suggestion to think about. I would buy the landscape fabric and cover the entire area near the garage where the soil is bare now. Then you could cut slits in the fabric where a shrub or perennial could go in that spot. The black fabric should prevent any seeds from germinating that may still be in the ground. If you see anything poking through the fabric later on, zap it with some kleen up or round up. (Depending on the job done by the removal company, there still may be some runners in the soil). Its just a thought...
