Hi Martha,

Yes from what I understand Thunderwood is also another name for poison sumac. There are a number of other interesting names for poison sumac including: swamp sumac, poison elder, poison ash, poison dogwood. Sumac is a shrub/tree and prefers swampy conditions. I have never heard of a sumac being a vine. According to the Berks County Cooperative Education website, poison sumac does not have variable forms. Perhaps Thunderwood is a localized "nickname"? It's not one I'm familiar with for a vine
